“ONLY A CAT”

He was only a cat
A stray at that
Why waste a thought or a care?

Alone and forlorn
To a life he was born
Of suffering -- ‘twas all he could bear

A sad little guy
Out of sight he would lie
Struggling to get through each day

Walking this earth
Doomed from his birth
Searching for a safe place to stay

But this life took its toll
Until only his soul
Was untouched by the unending pain

He could no longer stay
So God took him away
To a place that is soothing as rain

He was only a cat
His fur tangled with mat
Too late for his body to mend

He was only a cat
A stray at that
But I loved him. He was my friend.
